A Grand “Welcome to Portugal” Experience Luncheon
April 3, 2020 12pm Casa Guedes II Restaurant
Please join Chef Jacques Haeringer as we kick off our Villages and Vintages Culinary Adventure on the Douro River with an exceptional Portuguese experience you won’t want to miss!
We will begin our “Welcome to Portugal” experience by meeting in the lobby of the Intercontinental on April 3rd, at 11:45a where our private coaches will take us to the famous Casa Guedes II Restaurant, arguably the most famous pork restaurant in Portugal. Below, you will find the link to one of the thousands of articles on the original Casa Guedes
Over the holidays, Chef Jacques son, an editor in New York, was having lunch with his former boss. Over lunch, she asked Marc if his Papa, by chance, was going to Portugal with his customers and friends in April, in which Marc replied, yes! As it turned out her stepson is the owner of the restaurant Chef had already booked! Talk about small world!
We begin our exciting afternoon with a Portuguese wine tasting,of course, yes, please! Our friend and Export Director, Silva Chouperio will come on site to lead us on a tasting of the beautiful, award-winning wines of Casa Da Passerella from the Dao region of Portugal. Winemaker Paulo Nunes was just awarded the prestigious “Portuguese Winemaker of the Year on February 4, 2020! A very good way to start our “Welcome to Portugual experience, indeed!
We then begin our Portuguese lunch, featuring a classic four-course menu, crafted by both Chef Jacques and Chef Joana of Casa Guedes. Of course, our luncheon choices will be expertly paired with delectable Portuguese wines, including white and red port with dessert.
Concluding our experience and the start to a magical week, the owner of Casa Guedes, Mr V, has generously provided his favorite performers of the authentic musical experience and live performance of Portugal’s famous fado. Set on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, fado is a song style mixing elements of poetry and music. This music genre officially originated in Portugal around the 1820s, though it is thought to have much earlier origins. Fado is known for how expressive and profoundly melancholic it is.
